The Freight Plan will analyze the freight transportation system and the geography of freight activity and will identify investment strategies that aim to enhance freight accessibility throughout Will County while balancing and considering community needs. The freight transportation system is an extensive and interconnected network of highways and connector roads, inland waterways, river terminals, railroads, pipeline and pipeline terminals, warehousing and distribution centers and airports with air cargo operations.
The intermodal facilities in Will County serve as North America’s largest inland port with $65 billion worth of products transported in 2016. As a result, Will County’s freight transportation system is the economic gateway to the Midwest and national economies.
